Default 98 golf won't start

I have a 98 Golf that's been having a bit of trouble upon startup for a while now, sometimes more than others, but I always have to turn the keys a few times to get the engine to get going. Yesterday, though, when I turned the keys, nothing at all happened. The car had power, the a/c and lights both worked fine, but nothing happened when I turned the keys. I had the car towed to a mechanic that told me the battery needed to be replaced, so he replaced the battery and the car ran fine when I left the shop. About an hour after getting home, I tried to start the car again and had the exact same problem as before. If it helps at all, I live in Texas and we've had some nasty heat for about a week now.

you're in the wrong section, this is the mk2 section you want the MK3 or MK4 section. It sounds like there could be a short somwhere in the wiring, thats tripping maybe. maybe due to the heat wires could have melted and are touching or something along those lines?

Could also be faulty ignition or shoddy starter motor. It's hard to diagnose from just that. I would ask in the right section, it could be a popular problem
