burning oil as fast as my gasoline?

Hi,

I need help to figure out what to do, my wifes 90' jetta with a 1.8 8v motor is going through 2 quarts of oil a week. I just changed my oil and didn't find any shaving or anythign like that. I dont have a compression tester but will get one to see what thats like.

Do you guys have any idea on what I can check to see what can be causing this?
Its not an oil leak btw, the car has smoke blue/black

IF i decide to keep the car what is best to do, send to a shop to rebuild, rebuild myself, or do a swap or hybrid?

Headgasket possibly...is there any white smoke... Your rings may be friend...that is alot of oil to be burning in 7 days...in 3 mounths...
