Default generic alt belts

has anyone ever had a problem with generic altenator belts? my dad said he broke two belts that he bought at Canadian Tire and ended up just buying one from a VW dealer and hasn't had a problem. Is he nutty or is it worth the 1 hour drive to the dealer to get the belt from them?

generic belts are ok, but if your worried, just go to the dealer. I have used generic belts in some of my older vw's, and never had a problem.

i had the same problem with my alt. belt. broke a couple. I talked to a guy i know who owns a shop and h's owned vw's and audi's for years. He says he never uses generic belts on vw's. For some reason they don't hold up well. They aren't expensive at the dealer. Only a few dollars more. In my book it's not worth the risk.
