Default hello all new here w/ question

I just recently bought a 91 Jetta with a 1.6 L diesel engine. it needed a few things so i'm fixing it. replaced some injector return lines, but a battery in it, and a Altenator. Now there is my problem. The altenator belt is shot so i bought a new one. the one i got was too big. So I took the old belt in and they matched it up. the second one i got looks really close but is too tight, too small wont go over the altenator pulley even with the idler out of the way.
Any one have any idea whats going on or what i'm doing wrong? is there a special belt? any help would be great.
thank you
Brian

run into similar problem with my alt. belt replacement months ago.
i ended up with Duralast part # 13270. perfect fit

for more diesel info you should seriously check out
vwdiesel.net and vwvortex.com.

i'm sure there's lot of smart people on this forum
but the 2 sites i've mentioned got some hard core diesel dubbers, who knows whats up and what to do with diesel engines.

Default thank you

thank you very very much. a 27 in belt is what i ended up with althought it calls for a 27.5 belt. The width of the belt is another problem i had. i was in a hurry to get the altenator off and cut the old belt. somehow someone got a 26 in belt on it
thank you again
Brian
