I have a 1990 gas golf, with an automatic transmission. When i hit around 27 miles/hr I start hearing a Howl/growl, coming from the front end. it gradually gets louder, and more pronounced, i have not driven it faster then 40 miles/hr. Does anyone have any idea what it may be, and how to go about diagnosing it.
Any help would be much appreciated |

Yeah it could be a wheel bearing my old grand am got really loud past 55 because of the wheel bearing that was going bad on it.

I checked the wheel bearing, they look like there are worn. i was in the process of changing them and found that when i pressed the new one in, it appears loose in the steering knucle. can you usually move them around once you install them? i needed to use a press to get the old ones out, and to install the new ones.

So i replaced the wheel bearing, lower ball joints, tie rod ends, and one cv joint boot, got busy at work again, but yesterday took it out for a drive and the growl is still there, i think it could be the transaxle, has anyone changed the bearing in one of them before? how hard is it? i will have to check the fluid first though
