Default need to replace cabrio top, anyone done it?

I just painted my 85 golf cabrio, she looks great, but the top needs to be fixed. Has anyone tried to do this on their own? I can get all the fixings for under $300 online. I went to a shop in town he wants to charge me $1300 to get the top and order it for me. Is it possible to do on my own???
