Default new to golfs, swap info please

Hi, Im new to volkswagens. Im looking into getting into rally racing, and the first car im going to build is going to be a mk2 golf. I got this car free from a buddy and it currently has a diesel engine in it. The Diesel isnt exactly great for rally, so i want to swap an engine in it, what is the best compatable engine/tranny i can swap into this car... I prefer a motor with electronic fuel injection that has a turbo, or that i can turbo charge easily. I have experience with swaps, I own an r32 skyline gts-t that i have swapped an rb20 for an rb25 so i know what im doing mechanically, i just have no knowledge about volkswagens. Any input would be helpful, thanks.

Everything fits. No, really, every watercooled VW engine bolts in. All of them.

sweet, thats good news, now which engine is the most reliable with the most parts available and so on... what do you reccomend. Im thinking about going with the 8 valve instead of the 16 because of reliability and what not.

ABA 2L from a MK3, preferable '93-95 since the wiring is easier and the throttle body on OBD2 motors is difficult to fit under the hood.

Generally, you can't break them, they have a lot more low end than the 1.8s, they're cheap (I've bought several complete ~130K mile MK3s wrecked for less than $250). Mods are pretty available. Everything from chips to supercharger (roots, centrifugal and screw chargers all available) and turbocharger kits.

the 2.0L aba from the mk3 w/obd1 is definetly a nice choice, especially for what you want to do. very tough engine, doesn't weigh much, and can make great power with a turbo even with stock internals. I heard you can also use the engine management from a g60 corrado if you want to make a "junkyard" turbo setup rather than buying a new expensive standalone system.

Enjoy and happy hunting
