Default New to the MK2

Hey,
So I`m new to the MK2`s. I recently bought a 1986 Jetta GLI.
Its a sweet car, but it has its quirks. It has the 1.8 8v SOHC,
and it has 2 1/2 inch Borla catback with 18 inch Borla muffler.
The previous owners had also drilled out the airbox. It is lowered slightly with 16'' TSW wheels.
I previously had a 1995 Passat with the VR6, so the 1.8 isn`t really gettin it.
I was curious if anyone has some advice on a cheap way of getting more power out of it.
Would taking the A/C comp, and power steering off improve my power?
How would I go about doing this?

Default Leave A/C and P/S on

No. removing PS would not make ANY noticeable power gain, but would make it unpleasant to drive, esp. with O/S tires. Removing AC is lots of work if you do it properly and don't just shred stuff, needs new belts, brackets. For a bit more top end power, consider larger throttle body, free-flow exhaust. But be sure your injectors are clean, HT wires good, proper timing, good fuel pressure, clean filters, new plugs, rotor, cap. A good tune-up usually gives you more on-the-ground power than the first thousand bucks of aftermarket goodies. Many of them are pure BS.

Good luck.

Right on, thanks man. Do you know of anywhere I can order the OEM door panels, or some kick ass aftermarket ones?

There are lots of places that sell hoods and quarter panels and such like but I have yet to find a supplier for doors. I think you may be stuck with finding the best you can get at a junkyard.

Although, if you know anyone who travels to China they're still making the Mk2's there. Of course, you might get your local VW dealership to order you some from there as well. With two you get egg roll.
