Default stereo questions

Hello y'all!

I am driving an '89 Cabriolet and thinking about replacing my current miserable stereo system. Only 2 out of 4 speakers work and the music quality is horrible. The front speakers are located in the door in the plastic sidepocket that is sticking out. The whole sidepocket is about 18" long and 4" wide and approx. 6.5" are used by the speaker. I have no idea how big the rear speakers are, but I am sure that those are still the factory-installed ones.

Question #1: Can I install bigger speakers and if so, how? Do I need to get a whole new sidepocket for the front?

Question #2: Do you have enough space (depth) to install a 2nd stereo where your cigarette lighter and ashtray is (underneath the a/c vent exhaust and above the three additional gauges)?

Question #3: Where do you install your satellite antenna if you choose to get XM or Sirius?

Thanks!

6.5" is about the maximum you want up front...so I would just stick with the current side pockets and upgrade the existing speakers. There are many good 6.5" speakers out there, and about the only thing much larger than that other than a subwoofer is a 6x9" speaker (which is not good for up front). The only thing you need to worry about is the depth of the pocket as some aftermarket speakers have a larger mounting depth than the stock ones, so make sure you measure the depth of the pockets and then compare to any speakers you are considering (the mounting depth should be listed among the specifications for most speakers).

Also make sure the actual speaker is a 6.5" speaker, it might be a 5.25" speaker under a larger grille, in which case you might have to do a little cutting and tweaking here and there to fit a larger speaker.

Hi, I searched on here looking for stereo upgrade advice for my friends Cabriolet, and yours was the closest match I could find. I think her's is even the same year. I'm pretty sure her's is the cabriolet at least...forgive my lack of vw knowledge. It basicaly looks like a golf that's a convertable. And I'm sure she said it's an 89, but maybe it was 88, not sure. She just got it recently. Pretty nice little car though I must say. And in great shape considering how old it is.
Anyways, does anyone have any good stereo upgrading advice? I myself realy only know Jeeps, so that's why I came here.
She'd like to put 6x9's in the back, but not have them just in boxes to be stolen when the tops down. I took a look at the back seat area and I'm not sure, but maybe cutting into the metal under the seats and mount them in there would be good, but I have no idea what's behind that area and if that's even a good idea. Anyone done something simular, or have any better idea's.
I'll help her and take a look at the front speakers and see if some good 6.5's will fit in there.

Thanks in advance for any help and suggestions

Door pockets use a 4x6.
