Default Timing Belt Change Intervals

Hi,
I am now the proud owner of a 87 GTI 16V, that has about 110K on it. The car was taken car of, and the owner told me he changed the Timing Belt and Water pump at 53K.. Only issue is that was in 1995.. should I be looking to change it again?

Any help is appreciated.

Thanks
Tom

I have heard the 16v yous hould replace every 40k-60k as it wears out sooner than some of the newer ones, although I have been told it is a much easier job than a typical timing belt
