Default Tranny question. Please help!!!

I have a 1996 VW golf. I have to warm it up for about 15 minutes even in the summer before the transmission will work. It will work in reverse but not drive until it is warmed up. Once it is warmed, it runs beautifully, not even slippage. Any thoughts? I hate to put alot of money into it. Hoping it's not a major issue.

This is a stab in the dark but I have never been disappointed changing the transmission fluid. If you are trying to solve a problem without spending dough that would be the route I take. It could avoid any other work and it is cheap and easy to do in your garage.

Thank you for your reply. Unfortunately, we've already tried that. It just seems odd to me that once it warms up, it runs so well.

As it warms up a seal swells and starts to allow the pressure to build in the forward pump circuit. Is it a 96 Mk3 or 86 Mk 2?? The MK3 transmision is better mechanically but had electric solenoids that also give trouble.
