Tranny Swap 83 Rabbit GTI - 87 Golf GTI :: Possible?

I have an 87 Golf GTI, single overhead cam - 1.8L with no reverse.

I have a 83 Rabbit GTI tranny, (single overhead cam - 1.7L)

Will they swap? I'd rather do this than pay for another tranny. Both manual 5 Speeds.

I think they have different size input shaft splines and the clutch will need to be changed.

they will do it, did it to my jetta from a 82 rocco.
but both gti's should also have the same shaft size.
