I have a mk3 with a 2.0. Transmission will go into reverse but as soon as you disengage the clutch automatically pops right out with lots of grinding. Is the tranny shot or is there something that im missing here. All forward gears work just fine. Any help would be much appreciated.

i have the same prob with my cabrio... i have to physically hold my gear in reverse while going back while it makes a god awful clunking noise. if i let go it pops out and grinds. i have to ease on the clutch and play with it.. if im parked on a hill i'm not strong enough to hold it, so i do have to park creatively...
my mechanic says its "missing teeth" on the gear inside the tranny... at least thats the way he explained it to me. i got the car this way about a year and a half ago and its getting worse... please if anyone can help with any other info please do!!! mandy |

i would assume that it is something inside the tranny yet again...i have not heard of this rivet before but if the output shafts are like that and that rivet pops out i would suspect a lot more issues then just when in reverse...i would assume other grinding banging would be going on...i would aslo like to think more along the lines of missing teeth as another has put it but it poses another issue to me that if it was missing teeth then it would want to stop driving for a quick second or it would have trouble with reverse...when you put it in gear and hold it does it grind or is the backup motion smooth? if it backs up smoothly then not a gear problem...if it grinds then a missalligned gear is most likley a suspect... as for it popping out of gear i would assume more missalignment...if it grinds as backing up and pops out then the whole mechanism could be missaligned or tottaly shot...im not an expert by anymeans but from what i know about transmissions i come to those conclusions
