Question 95 jetta code reading

okay ive looked all over and found some things out about my car but i cant seem to find how to read the check engine light. ive tried reading it with 2 obdII readers and says *link error* so i was reading some info on 95 jettas and they say obdII started on 96's. and to check if my car is really obdI then look on the ECU and if the last three numbers before a two letter ending say "258" then is obdI but if its 259 then its obdII. well mine is 258 and so i assume its obdI, but my question is arnt obdI readers a 2 pin sorta deal and obdII readers a 16 pin? because my port is 16 pins and its black not purple, im so so confused someone please explain, it will be very much appreciated

You had a obd1 swapped into your car at some point in its life. And thats why the OBDII readers wont read your ECU
