Default 97 jetta my fan and a/c won't work

I own a 97 Jetta GLX VR6 and the fan in the car recently stop working as well as the AC. Well the fan only works if you turn it to the highest setting ( 4). And if I turn the AC on and the recirculate on, they light up like they are on but when I turn on the fan to 4 the lights go off and it doesn't blow cool air. I recent had the AC fixed but they only recharged the Freon.. everything was working great for about a week then this..

Fixed. I dropped it out at JQ Automotive in Bloomfield, NJ. Cool shop. Family owned. Not over priced, and Jim knows about VW and AUDI, ( two of the most electronic problem-prone cars in the market) I also had the rear pass. window mechanism replace.

did you fix the AC as well? was your AC compressor out? they can be quite expensive, new.

I need one myself, but not willing to spend 200+

Congrats on getting the problem fixed. Did the mechanic say what was wrong? Let us know for anybody else who may have this same problem.

It's the resistor block that was replaced. But it could also be the relay or the switch. These three parts of the fan/AC are the common culprits. It wasn't an expensive part but it's tuck up under the dash so I had a mechanic handle the fix. The cost of repair with part was $145.00
