Angry Airfilter sound

Hello,

I noticed that the airfilter of my Golf 3 is making a lot of noise...
I checked it, and it is not the cover of the filter that produces the sound.
It's really the inside. Could it be that the filter inside is broken?
I don't have experience in handling this. Can I safely remove the cover to check what is really the source of the loud noise?

The noise is louder let's say in 3rd gear than in 5th gear... which of course can be physically explained (with RPM's, frequencies, etc...)

Any help pls?

Yes you can remove the cover no problem. Take the cover off, take a look around.

After an airfilter housing inspection, if you have not found a culprit, I would pull off the airbox entirely and drive the car just briefly on a clean road long enough to rule out the problem being from the intake (dowstream) etc.

Hello guys,

I finally removed the cover of the airfilter to - as you mentioned - take a look around, but the filter is not broken, and so I didn't find a culprit yet. Concerning the advice of Ninja Please : why do you think that driving the car briefly without any airfilter - as I understand that - would rule out the problem being from the intake (downstream)?
IMHO driving the car without the airbox doesn't change the structure of the intake, so why would that solve my noise-problem? Sorry for being critical here
I'm just wondering if doing that is not dangerous for the engine of the car...

No problem on the critical -I sometimes do not word things clearly, and often post under the influence.

Yeah, it is dangerous, which is why you only do it long enough to make sure the noise isn't from downstream of the Airbox. Some noises can emanate from the motor but are only heard from the Airbox and so sound like they are an Airbox problem when they are really a throttle/manifold problem. Get it ?
