Default Anyone know how to turn off the Check Engine Light

I just recently bought a 1998 VW GTI 2.0V. I've been driving it for about a week without a problem, but since two days ago, the Check Engine Light came on. Could this be a serious problem? If not, does anyone know how to reset it? I know that you can reset the Audi Check Engine lights by pressing some buttons in certain sequences... If anyone knows, please reply to this post~ thanx

as long as the check engine light is not blinking you shouldn't have a real problem. the only way that i know of to get the check engine light to go away is to hook a vag-com up to your car which is a Windows-based Diagnostic Software for VW / Audi / Seat / Skoda, this will tell you what is making your check engine light appear. usually it is little things, like my friend's went on when he changed from a lower octane gas to a higher. so there is really no worries unless it starts to blink. hope this helped.

As above mentioned, to reset your check engine light you need either the above, or a Handheld unit (I have Palm and Visor) with a "Injector Clean Cartridge" around $380 Canadian).

The shops and dealerships are using OBD II Scanner by the way. (Even VW).

Here is some food for you thought, though:

1) If you reset that light, and there is really a problem it will come back on (could be 1 minute or months after the reset)

2) Make sure you get the codes when reseting yourself or with a buddy, and reset it as "Remind me later option" don't clear it from the memory of the System.

3) Good luck.

Thanks for your replies. I think the reason is because I started feeding higher octane gas to the car. I'm pretty sure the previous owner used regular gas. But I'll look for the programs for either Windows or Palm just for the future. Thanks again.
