I assume you are using a brake caliper tool kit to compress the pins?
![]() Here is an edmunds article that may outline a step you are missing: |

nope , the link you added also said '' undo the caliper bolts and slide the caliper off'' which is where i'm stuck the sodding thing wont come off with force , sliding it off isn't an option. what would the tool do anyway ?

i had thought that but hoping it wasn't needed as nothing i've read says it is necessary, ah well , anyway can't you just keep the old pads in and pry the pistons back ? i've always done that with my motorbike and it never caused a problems .

on my old Explorer (yes yes I drive a 93 Golf GL now, I've learned my lesson)
And both my calipers had seized. Get a c-clamp keep the old pads on and geive as much grip strength as you've got...us wd-wo, Jig-a-loo, anti-seize spray whatever...nail that thing with as much lub as you can, then squeeze them together. Make sure that once you have the pads off to put anti-seize on your pins for the next time..If I can do it on a Ford (notorious for seizing pins) then I can do it for any vehicle.

BTW if you are replacing rotors as well? Hit the caliper with a hammer to loosen it and slide it off..Not knock it senseless but to give it a push.

I did mine yesterday, and found that it can be a bit challenge to remove the caliper. You really should remove both bolts completely. But if you slacken the bolts, at a certain point they will stop. Now try to push and turn a little further back. This can be done by pusing the high metal ring surrounding the bolt. Bottom line: remove the bolts completely. Then, just ram them with a hammer.
