Default Getting New Speakers - Help

Hey Everybody.

I just got a Jetta 1994 manual and so far happy with it. It got almost 300 000 K on it, but the car is very clean, with no rust, runs well. Its sometime tricky to start if it has not been run, but I guess its the way it is.

Anyway, I am not good with cars, so I have to ask you. The speakers it has plain suck, and I am a music person, so I want to buy a new set. Was browsing ebay today and there are different versions like 6.5, 5.25, 4.5 etc

The question is
Which ones fit in Jetta 1994?
How many can be fit there? Like 2 only, or 4... etc?

Its tricky, cause I dont want to buy something that doesnt fit.. ))

your speakers are 6 inch all around providing that you have and 8 speakers setup...2 in the front door and 2 tweeters uptop...and 2 in the back with another 2 tweeters....

So...you just need to go to a store that sells car audio DONT go through ebay because you are not guarented they will work, plus no warranty!

Of course get yourself a way better deck then your stock...for one that you need they run at 100 or so...or you can always go better and get all the bells and whistles if you plan on upgrading later. that way you are not spending another 150-200

If your just looking for some speakers just to give you a little better sound than stock then just go with 4 6 inch coaxial speakers and just swap out your stock ones but keep the tweeters because they are still good....not to hard to do at all....

Now you can go so much better and really upgrade your sound quality by buying 2 component speaker sets...these differ from coaxial by they have a separate tweeter instead of one built into the speaker. And they include a crossover. replace your fronts for sure...
now do you plan on adding a sub anytime soon? If so then dont buy component speakers for the rear. All you need are rear fillers (coaxial) because the subs will drown out most the rear sound anyways. The fillers are just to fill that dead zone of no treble or midrange. IF you go with components there you are just wasting money... If no subs then yes go with components.

You also have a choice now if you want to add a four channel amp in there to provide the necessary power at higher volumes. New speakers require a little more power to run. but if you upgrade your deck you will still have good sound...it will just start cutting out at really high volumes without an amp.

Now installing a 4 channel amp is a little tricky as you have to re-run wires to wherever your amp is...but i guess thats up to you

thanks Musicmaster, very helpful =)))))

I'll just go for 4 speakers and a new deck, leaving tweeters intact. I'm am not planning on buying a sub now, since thats a little too expensive for me right now, but want one sometime down the road.

You said that the coaxial speakers should be OK without an amp, but with new deck, so thats what I will get. Considering that I will get a sub along with an amp later, do you have any recommendations for some speakers/deck Musicmaster? Cant give you a price range right now, but not shit, and not premium - something in the middle.

i have helped put in many systems so i kinda know what i am talking about

Any speaker is good without an amp...the only problem is you are running off your deck and the most it gives out per channel is 52W (thats the highest i have seen on a deck anyways) I dont think that stocks get up that high... so you compare that to amped speakers where you can get up to 160W per channel...

the only thing you will notice if you do not amp your speakers is really high volumes it will start to cut out...just because it does not have the necessary power to provide to those speakers at high power.

Even component speakers are good without an amp that what i had at first before i bought my 4channel amp. I had cutting out issues like stated so i went to amped speakers...

for you i would recommend going with a component speaker instead of coaxial. It might be a little more expensive but because you are planning to add a sub it will sound better. With coaxials its just all the mid, high, and low notes come from the same speaker. Components only the mid and low come from the speaker and the high from the tweeter included, and the crossover you can set how loud you want the tweeter to be. I recommend these because it creates a "virtual" sound. With coaxials all the sound comes from one area and it is restricted a little bit.

The speakers vary quite a bit. I have friends with Pheonix golds and they like them alot but they might be pricey. I have everything but JL Audio speakers, JL is a top brand and pretty expensive but i think that its only good in its sub and amp world along with their sub brand Total Mobile Audio that is, not in the speaker world.
Kenwood Excelons seem to be good on the market and thats what i have. I have yet to crack them and i am happy with them but i have got the crossovers set perfect.
JBL would be good. you get what you pay for there, and they seem pretty reasonable.

Dont go with any Insignia or Sony or Panasonic stuff. They were ment in the electronics world, and some of the speakers they make are alright but they dont equal up to any mobile audio companies.

I guess all i can say to you is go to an audio store and just take a listen to all the speakers that are there. It all depends on your preference and what sounds good to you.
