will a che trans bolt up to a 2.0 98 jetta or does it have to be a dfq......

Yes.
DFQ, CHE tranny's are essentially identical (housing), they have identical ratios and final drive, and were used in 93-98 Golf & Jetta
Ratios for Tranny Codes AMC, DFQ, CHE (from '93 115hp):
Drive Gear: Final- 3.67, 1st- 3.45, 2nd- 1.94, 3rd- 1.29, 4th-0.97, 5th- 0.8

so aamco, yeah only place to turn here, could use an old che code trans and reman it if they wanted to....thanks. do you know of any potential problems if you switch form the factory dfq to a che.........you said everything lines up, but do you know of anything that could go wrong......i just dont want to be in this situation again 6 mos down the road.....

As far as fitment, and gearing there will be no problem...6 months down the road, I can't say since I don't know the condition of the CHE they have. Assuming it's in good shape, you'll be fine.
