Jacking Up by Rear Axle Beam?

Have I damaged any part of the rear suspension on a '98 Jetta GL by placing a jack under the rear axle beam and jacking up the entire rear end? I've got some noise coming from back there when going over bumps, and the rear end gets “skittery” when going over washboard road surface. I'm sure it needs shocks and probably springs back there, too, but I'm wondering if I did any damage to other suspension components by inappropriate jacking technique. Thanks...

Nope. Very good place to jack up the car as it won't crumble/collapse like the side pinch welds tend to do.

Not really it's a standard jacking point however try to jack at either sides not the middle. The noise could be any or all of your suspension components including the rear beam bushings depending on the age of the car.
