Default jetta 1.9 turbo diesel rebuild - a few questions

helping a good friend rebuild an engine out of a 1.9 TD jetta...AZZ or AAZ is the engine code i believe. not too familiar with VW myself, so i'm just trying to grab all the info i can.

firstly, is there anything i should be on the lookout for wearing out? btw. the trans is NOT an issue it is being replaced. shaft bearing grenaded in the old one lol.

secondly and most importantly - i've been measuring bearing clearances for this friend as the engine history is unknown. i figure its much better to give them a simple check with plastigauge before we go through all the work of transplanting this engine.

according to someone my friend knows the bolts on the crank mains cannot be reused or retorqued....i have found no indication of this in my service manual (it is a haynes however...bleh) and for the size of the bolts the torque appears to be well below the yield strength of the bolts. so is there any truth to this?? can the bolts be reused if they are in good shape?

thanks for helping out a noob guys!

I would not re-use the bolts. I am not sure if it is a VAG recommended practice, but when I did mine I didn't re-use them and never would. Also, there are 3 head gaskets available for the engine. They should be marked by the number of holes (I forget exactly where on the gasket), but you should always go one number up after a re-deck of the block and resurface of the head. The three head gaskets are all different thicknesses BTW. I just didn't see the thread, I don't suck.
