Default locked up strut mount nuts

Tried to undo the nut on top of the strut to replace the mount. Everything I read makes it sound like a bit of effort along with the right socket and allen wrench will do the job. With this car, it took 2 people and a partially stripped allen wrench to accomplish nothing. The nut seems frozen in place. Looking closer they're not regular nuts, they've got a flat ridge at the top with some arrows and markings. Is the 98 Golf supposed to have lock nuts on the top of the struts? Did some shop decide to weld these things in place?

Anyone run across these before? Is an impact wrench the only way to get these things off? Do they have to be replaced?

Did you spray some liquid wrench or wd40 before trying . hat sucks is with out the spring caps on the later cars the dirt an weathering tends to get in there. using a chemical release solvent will break up the rust an or white stuff. Spray it let it sit. try again if no go then get a impact on it. You should be able to buy a replacement nut but the strut will have to be replaced if you plan to futher use the allen option

find a good penetrating oil. i always have luck with aero kroil (tough to find) or crc freeze off. if that does not work try an impact gun.

Went by the dealer to see if I could pick up replacement nuts. The parts guy insists that a) this year golf originally had the oval lock-nuts like mine and b) they do not need to be replaced. There were no replacement nuts in stock.
