Default Need Urgent Help!!!

Hi All,

I currently have a VW Golf MRK 3. The car has some how developed this really nasty rattling noise coming from underneath the car on the right hand side wheel. I can only hear most when i go over pot holes. I have to admit i did go over a bump quiet fast and i belive this is how the rattling started. I have asked a mate of mine and he said it maybe something to do with the suspension. I will most probably go and see a garage but i wanted to see if you guys know of any known problems it could be?

Any information would be helpful.

Thanks

Check your strut bearing (top strut mount) and your ball joint (connects the strut to the steering knuckle / lower control arm) - if you jack the car up (put it on a jackstand and make sure it's secure) - yank on the wheel - you shouldn't feel any lateral free motion. You can check the ball joint by using a screwdriver to lever it - you shouldn't be able to move it at all - it's just supposed to provide rotation - not free motion. The strut bearings will exhibit free motion at the top of the strut - if you yank the wheel and a friend can see the top of the strut moving around it's time to replace it.

jack the car up and secure it. grab the wheel @ 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock and try to move if there is play there then your tie rod or the corresponding side needs th be replaced

do that with what stevethefolkie and you should be able to figure out the problem

i think its a ball joint the strut bearing wouldnt make noise if you hit a bump, but i know that bad ball joints make a heck of a noise when you hit a bump. they arent too expensive.

Maybe I'm showing my age - the old MK1's would make a heck of a racket when the strut bearings were shot -
