when i bought my 95 the gas gauge would go everywhere, i bought a used cluster, 98 i think and it doesn't do that anymore. no biggie really unless it bugs you.

its most likely your cluster, its a common problem, usually if your pretty good at soldering and you have a good magnifying glass then you can fix the problem, which is some broken solder points

there is really any in particular but if your problem is near your gas gauge and your blinker then look around them for broken solder points, but if you aren't good with soldering you could cause more damage to the board/cluster, and in that case your better off buying a used cluster

IMO the first task of anyone who gets ahold of an older VW (or any German car) should be to clean the fuse/relay connections with Isopropol Alcohol, check the wiring under the dash, clean the multipin connections under the dash and behind the cluster, and check all ground points. If necessary re-solder the cluster and clean the wiring, multipin, and switches in the door and hatch/trunk (Its only about 11 screws to remove to get inside the door) All of this is probably an 8 hour project.

If you do this, you will probably have prevented more than half of the problems with the car in your future. This is the only way to keep the Ghost in the Machine happy and the Gremlins at bay.:k:

There is a not a relay for the cluster. Removing the cluster can be time consuming, you need to remove everything around the cluster including the steering wheel.

no need to remove the steering wheel, you can remove the cluster in about 10 minutes, here is a DIY VWvortex Forums: mk3 gauge cluster removal walkthru

if you hve a tilt wheels it *does* make it easier if you tilt it all the way down.
