Default OBD II Scanner

My Jetta's got the check engine light on so I decided to try and figure out what was wrong with it myself.

Car turns on if it's cold, will run for about 8 mins then a) stalls if on surface street or b) drops RPMs for split second but then continues if on freeway. From there, the starter will crank but the engine won't catch.

So I got one of these guys off eBay. I plug it in and it doesn't come up with any error codes.

Anyone have any good suggestions for OBD II scanners (or better yet, what does it sound like it is with my car ).

Peace
