Seasons greetings, folks.
My daughter owns a '95 Seat Cordoba which, I believe, has mechanicals based on Golf Mk3. Long story short, there is water in the auto transmission (fluid is a caramel/light brown colour) and also trans oil in the cooling system (substantial amount of light brown globs). I'd say that there is more oil in the cooling system than water in the trans) I've drained the auto trans and also the cooling system with a view to flushing both. What I can't figure out is how the oil/water ingress is taking place. I've removed the trans oil cooler (sits on top of box) and it seems ok. Is there anywhere else (other than internal transmission housing) where this can happen? If internal, where? Is this a common problem on this model? Is there a quick fix? Seats/Golfs are uncommon in Australia so just getting info is difficult let alone getting parts etc. Any help much appreciated. Cheers... |

Thanks for reply, appreciate it.
There's not much hope of us getting a stock replacement cooler any time soon so I'm wondering if the fitment of an aftermarket oil cooler is a proposition. Can someone confirm that the fitment of something like the one pictured below will be ok? I guess the main question is will the transmission oil pump cope with pushing the fluid along the 3/8" oil pipe to the front of the car and then back to the transmission? http://www.seanhylandmotorsport.com/...ges/SHMOCK.jpg |

These things always seem to happen at the wrong time... not that there's ever a "right" time Would you be kind enough to elaborate on why I shouldn't proceed? Is it that the trans pump won't handle it or is there some other reason that it won't work? Thanks for taking the time to assist, Aaron. |

As an update I can confirm that there is no problem with fitting an aftermarket radiator type oil cooler to a Mk 3 (the Seat version, at least).
I recalled a customer's husband used to work on veedubs, audis etc so I emailed them xmas eve and asked about it. He responded today and confirmed that all will be ok. The difficult part was working out how to connect the new 3/8" oil cooler hose to the existing threaded holes in the trans. I have a few different air/pipe fittings at home but the thread is not close to any of them. I ended up cutting off the existing mounting "bolt" and silver soldered a brass 3/8" male air connector to it. There's plenty of room to mount the oil cooler in front of the radiator so after I've flushed the trans a couple more times I'll finish the job. Thanks to those who responded and I hope everyone enjoys the holidays. |
