Default By-passing MAF?

My 1995 jetta GLX vr6 Revs from 1k rpm to like 400rmps back to 1k~ and stalls sometimes (But starts right back up)

I believe its the MAF (Mass airflow sensor) Instead of buying a new one, is there anyway to just by-pass it?

I put in all brand new spark plugs plug cables etc. The problem accurd before that, so nothing changed from it besides runin cleaner.

Even my step dad whos a machanic, changed a few on jettas, that had teh same problem, so im just tryin to figure out if there is a way to bypass it before spending cash on a new one.

Edit: Also put in a new alternator, the old one burned out so i know thats not the problem either.

did you try cleaning all the grounds?

you could just disconnect the MAF which would put the engine control in open loop mode but it wouldn't run nearly as well as with it and i've heard it might damage the cat. if anyone knows better, correct me.

I wouldn't believe the MAF until I checked the OBD II codes.

Start there. Assumptions cost a lot of money. Doing it right costs less.

...Also, why would you want to bypass an important piece of your emission system? Forget passing emissions testing, by taking the MAF out of the loop, you are running the engine rich, thereby wasting a lot of gas for nothing.

...And yes, it will eventually ruin your cat. The cat doesn't like raw fuel dumped on it, plus it will burn out your O2 sensors quicker, so in the long run, bypassing your MAF will cost you MORE money. You will have to replace the cat, the O2 sensor(s) AND the MAF.

(what you will be doing to your engine if you don't properly diagnose your problem...and I wanted an excuse to use this smilie )

LOL, love those chainsaw emoticons. Ugh, my cel keeps coming on telling me my bank one O2 sensor is sending it's signal slower than it should (failing O2).

*sigh*, time for a new O2...
