Default Re: Early 93 h/b 3dr 1.4petrol mk3 golf problems!

Hey!
First off i'd like to say what a great fourm, when i finally found it this evening it really put a smile on my face , cos i love golfs for some reason?(More so the older mk2&mk3)
Anyways, from the subject field you know what she is, so now a few problems if i may.
I swaped a 92 mk2 golf cl for an early 93mk3 a while back which came with a set of 175/45 R16 alloys which i've replaced since as there was none of the usual cabin ride you get in a golf plus i think they might have been doing some harm to the steering and the all round handleing was rubbish and the fact that i think that the back left shock seems to be shot, im living in ireland and some of the roads are crap sometimes you hit a pot hole and shes ok but then you hit a small bump and theres a dead thud from the back!
Are the shocks gone? or if its only on one side could i replace that side or would right and left have to be done? Also the wheels i replaced the alloys with are 170/75 R13 are these the correct type? The ride and handling and brakes are a lot better but again are they the right type, and what is the correct tyre pressure? at the moment its 30psi.
I have another important question about loss of power when starting and for the first few miles of driving but i've taken up enough for the moment! if theres to much here pls tell me so and ill keep it short and tight in the future
Rgds

Welcome to VWForum!

For me, a good indication that the shocks/struts are in need of replacement is:

If the front-end is porpoising, then the fronts are most likely gone.

If you're going around in a corner, you hit a bump, and the back-end shifts or steps over, then they might need replacing as well.

How many miles do you estimate that the suspension has on it?

Hey!
I.m living in ireland as said but the car is an english import, from Jersey i think and at the time of exchange it had 58,000mls on the clock if that can be belived, i have since brought that up to 60,000 but the noise was there from the start and i was puting it down to the alloys. I did give it a service last week and had a good look around and under the car ,when doing so i saw noting that would indicate that the car did have more than the orignal milage, its very clean inside and out and runs as good as a car half its age! its just if the shocks are gone would this be normal for a car with this small amount of milage? Also i did try to "bounce" her and she don't seem to bounce more than once but there does seem to be a funny clicking sound when i try this?
Tnks for the welcome!
Hope you don't mind some silly questions as there may well be a few as im newish to motors
