Default rubbing noise on front

hi, just bought a mk3 cab ,it started to make a rubbing noise coming from the front as if the tyre is rubbing on the arch or something, ive jack the car up and cant find anything catching, no play in wheel bearings, although i can move the strut tops about 1/2 inch,it does the noise wether you driving in a straight line or turning and gets faster with the speed of the car,the car has had lowering springs but nothing seems to be catching anywhere.

any help appreciated.

Even though you found the problem, I was going to say, any sound that increases with the speed of the car is usually a wheel bearing, I had to replace three and the fourth soon on my car. The guy I bought it from put new brake disks all around and didn't properly repack the bearings with geese, pretty lame.
