Default Secondaary Air Pump and the P0411 trouble code

My 99 Jetta keeps coming up with a P0411 trouble code.

My understanding of the secondary air pump is that it comes on when the car starts for a few seconds to add air to dilute the exhaust gases to meet emission standards.

Well I cleared the code. Drove 11 mile to work. All OK. Drove another 20+ highway miles in the afternnoon came to a stop light and heard the pump come on and then the check engine light came on. What could be wrong?

I took it to the mechanic. He found vacuum lines that were either not connected or had rotted away. he checkeed the pump and the valve and found no problems. He cleared the code and I am now in a waiting period to see if I get 50+ miles without a code. Then it can be inspected.

Secondary air pump is only used for 60 seconds during a cold start up to dilute exhaust gas. Shouldnt effect anything while you drive.
