i would check the ball in the linkage first of all, and if its not that then its more than likely to be a gearbox problem.

hope this helps

does it stay in it when you hold it in? if so dont worry about it. might be a chipped gear.

I am curious what ball you are talking about? And how it would effect reverse.

And also what engine is in this GTI you never specified. VR6 or 2L?

Its 2L then you most likely have a chipped reverse gear (Like 90% of the drivers out there) and you just gotta live with it or put a new tranny in.

The reverse gear is very nimble on these things. It can chip from simply putting it in reverse while still moving forward and it grinds/clunks or from reversing to fast and having it pop out on you (This is how mine chipped).

I second that opinion. If you have a 1997 GTI and your repair priority is a chipped reverse gear I'd say you are in the bonus round!

Take that money and Party.

no waste of money if it stays in with you holding it and drives fine. your good inless you want to pay massive money for it.

i have the same exact model with the same exact problem...but mine wont stay in if i hold it...it makes a weird grindin sound...then earlier a went to pull it out of reverse and i was stuck in and it was all loose but i got it out....1-5 shifts perfect just reverse is the problem...it will move like 2 inches then grind....i was told it could be either shift linkage, syncro, or somethin worse....any input?

reverse gear has no synchro so it cant be that my friend has the same problem his stays stuck in reverse, and you have to get out and push it while someone tries to pop it out of reverse, it could be anything have someone take a look at it that knows. and thanks guys for your opinions im gonna leave it as is for now and well see what happens i appreciate it.
