Default shifter ?

my shifter is loose. the gear is firmly selected but for some reason there is a lot of play in the shift handle itself. i looked under the shift boot by pulling up the plastic plate and all i see is some plastic ball with some kind of grooves on the outside of it. i didnt get much with inspecting it. im afarid to shift now. is the handle going to break away and leave me stuck in gear or neutral. somebody let me know. its a 98 2.0 jetta. please help.

so the repai kit is going to run $100. would it be easier to just get some sort of short shift kit. dont even know if thats possible. i already have the abd bracket. but if im going to spend money might as well be something worth while. are there short shift kits for jetta 3's, how much do they run, and are they worth it.

I sawed my shaft down (no pun intended ), I don't know if you're talking about the stock shift knob or the actual shaft itself but you can go to basically any auto store and buy a shift knob.

The SS kits for A3 2.0's don't need to replace the shifter shaft.

here's an example of what a short shift kit for a mk3 would look like. it is the shift linkage that is shortened.
