Sound system problems

Hi, I have got a 1995 Golf cabrio with the standard speakers throughout the car apart from a 10" sub in the boot. The problem is that my boot is so well insulated that I can't hear the sub unless the boot is open. My sub sounded great in my old Mk 3 Golf coz it was a hatchback, but in the cabrio it is pretty much mute until the boot is open. Has anyone had the same problem and if so how did they overcome it?
