Default Two more problems 1996 golf

i have another two problems with my golf 1.8L. The temp gauge does not work
and it doesn't start well when its cold. I think the problems are related. i noticed there are two temp sensors at the t-stat. Is one used for the pcm and the other for the gauge?? which one is which???
