Vr6 water pump replacement

Does anyone know if it is possible to change the water pump on 96 golf without removal of the engine? I have had a quick look but it seems pretty tightly tucked away, i am assuming it is the pump that is leaking due to a coolant puddle on the driveway each day directly under the area where the pump is,unless anyone knows of any core plugs in that same area which could be leaking.

You can do it very easily w/o removing the engine, just take out the front motormount bolt and the rear pass. side bolt, and loosen the tranny mount bolt and jack the motor up from the pan with a block, also disconnect the cat from the downpipe so it doesn't move to much and break. Hope this helps

Thanks for the info, just finished hardest part was threading new serpentine belt round all the pulleys!!!!!!!!
