Default 02 gti aftermarket stereo

so i just bought a 02 gti from a dealership.
it has the monsoon stereo installed right now, and also sub hookups in the back of the trunk.
but when i tried to connect my 12 sub and amp it doesnt work.
but im looking to buy a new amp and 10" sub, what do i need to do?
do i need an aftermarket stereo, and if i do, how would i make it look nice in the dash, since the monosoon is like 2 times the size of a standard aftermarket stereo?
and do i need a harness?
im really confused, should i just take it to a stereoshop and see what they say?

i just installed a amp and a 12 in my 05 gti....well i paid someone to do it....you have to run the rca's to a converter { which is 25$} then somehow run that to your amp in the back {part of the monsoon stereo}...the guy that did mine had a hard time finding the diagrams on the internet...it can be done...he told me it was an hour job then he took four....but it sounds awesome and was relatively cheap
