I have a problem with my transmission on my 2002 Jetta 1.8T 5-Speed Tiptronic. My car has 62k miles and I recently changed the tranny fluid. I put about 4 liters in my vehicle. What my problem is after I changed the fluid, my tranny won't switch out of 3rd and it makes this whirring noise going down the road after about 20 mph. Before I changed the fluid, my tranny was working perfect, no slipping, no hard shifting. I don't know what the fluid capacities is on a fluid change, and I'm afraid I overfilled it. Have any of you guys ran into this problem before?

Maybe you overfilled/underfilled it, you aren't even supposed to change the fluid until 100k milesish, check what's recommended, make sure it's the right fluid too.

Just last night I was talking with my mechanic about VW squirks and he brought up the tip transmissions failing at 60k, just sounds weird to see you mention that. What was the purpose for changing the transmission fluid?

Sorry for the delay in response. I have been trying to figure out how to get around town being that my Jetta is offline. I have been trying to figure out this problem on my own and I think I may have found the solution. The parts store I bought my transmission fluid has sold me the wrong type of fluid. They sold me the "goldish" looking one, the one, according to a VW tech, is the wrong one. After speaking to him, he advised me that the correct type of fluid was a "redish" looking fluid, much like standard transmission fluid. I was not too happy about that. Right now, I am trying to tow my car to the nearest dealership (120 mi away) so they can flush my transmission and put the right TYPE and AMOUNT of fluid. I'm hoping this will fix my problem and I won't have to replace the transmission (approx $2,600 reman). Lesson to be learnt: NEVER service your tiptronic transmission. Let the dealer deal with the headaches!
Just for your FYI TTTurbo, I originally put approx 4L and it was still doing the same problem. I tried putting 0.5L more/less into the transmission with the same results. It kicked 2 DTC's out. I forgot what were the exact trouble codes were, but they said:
1) Transmission Shift Position sensor mailfunction
2) Incorrect Gear Ratio
I will update once I take my Jetta to the dealership and get a response from them.
You could also have the trans computer reset, i know of a 04 tiptronic with 60k that starting acting really wierd (not shifting when it was supposed to etc.) and the dealer reset the comp and it now runs perfectly. It may have gotten confused when you serviced it and jsut needs to be put back to "zero"

That might be a possibility. When I was servicing it, I disconnected a sensor at the top of the tranny. This sensor HAS to be connected in order to start your veh (trust me, I found out the hard way after 5 min of scratching my head). After that, the "transmission shift sensor mailfunction" DTC popped up. Now to explain the "whirring" noise around the differential... I'll tell the dealer when they service it. Thanks.
Also, I keep hearing about these "throttle body adaptations". I disconnected the battery completely while I was servicing it and I'm wondering if I should get them to do that too while they're at it. My engine ran fine after I hooked everything back up. I'm wondering if it's going to create any performance changes. Any ideas?

I just wanted to service the car. I didn't believe in a "lifetime" fluid. I figured the car had 61k and was in need of a fluid change. I'm kind of glad I did. The fluid looked burnt and old and was in need of a fluid change. But as far a performance of the transmission, it was working perfectly beforehand. I didn't notice any problems with it.
my wife has an 02 vw gti 1.8t auto tip trans. these transmissions are filled with a mineral based oil, which aparently doesnt break down as regular oil does. according to vw, the transmission fluid never has to be changed. i found this out when i wanted to change hers with the right fluid, after calling 5 places that dont carry it i called the dealer and found this out.
