1.8t high milage

been looking around and cant really find an answer so imma post it here n see what happens...

so my buddy has a 2003 vw golf 1.8t manual with about 170,xxx miles on it and he is wondering if he should be sticking with 5w40 synthetic or should he be using a heavier weight oil because of the high milage. and was also wondering what else he should be looking for with a higher milage 1.8t. he has already had the timing and the water pump done and all the fluids. he also is comming up on a gear oil change too and wants to know what to use.

Just stick with it. Only real test would be an oil pressure test with both weight oils. I don't buy into the running thicker oil to compensate for wear.

With the age and mileage on the car, he should be looking to replace the PCV tubes and elbows. They are plastic and have probably become very brittle by this time.

Gear oil. Use gl-4 only. Really anything that says gl-4 is ok for vw trans. I just did mine and used Pennzoil synchromesh.

for gear oil i just went and got oem fluid from the dealer. i was also wondering about heavier weight oil for higher mileage motors

I always run heavier oil in cars with over 100k. Not sure if its necessary but it's what I've always been told. In most of the cars I've had, I've used 10w40
