Default 1.8T Replacement Engine?

Hi, a few days ago I had a timing belt go and now I need a new engine. Just wondering if anyone knows where the best place is to get one. I either want something cheap and reliable that the mechanic can put in or something with extra power I can put in for the same price. So far it looks like I'll be spending 4 grand plus labor. If thats the case the car get sold as is. Its a 2002 Jetta with 1.8t and tiptronic. So any advice would be appritiated much. Thanks!

How about just replacing the valves and possibly the piston heads if needed?

Well the mechanic is looking at it right now. Im going to guess the pistons got slammed by the valves pretty bad since it happened at the worst time, coming off the freeway at 65mph. I just dont think I'll have that good of luck to just have the head and or valves to be bad! I just wanted to get all my options ready so I know exactly what to do when I find out in the next day or two.

Did the belt break before the interval of when your supposed to change it?

If so, I'd have a word with VW if I were you.

How many miles do you have? Are you the original owner? Are the warrenties on VW's 4 years now? Or is it a CPO? I had a hole in CYL #4 in my TT and they replaced the valves, pistons, short block, head and a few other parts. The dealer wanted to put a brand new engine in it but the Regional Rep didn't want to since it would have been just a tad more to do that. Cheap bastards... Oh well, it only cost me $50 to basicly have a rebuilt engine.

I would def price out what the diff would be to rebuild it to replacing it.

They wont' do anything about it...people have tried millions of times. Do I think they SHOULD since it's so common? Yes, but will they? No.

If the car is under factory or powertrain warranty, then VW will fix it. I'm not too sure about CPO though.

Factory warranty: 4 years or 50K which ever comes first
Powertrain warranty: 60K, but I can't remember how long

If it broke before the reccomended change, then they most likely would fix it. I've heard of others that have CPO cars and the timing belt breaking at 40k or earlier and had it all fixed for the $50 deductable. Now what is the reccomended change for VW's? I know with TT's it's something like 80-90k (could be wrong but this is what comes to my mind) miles but if you go into a dealer they say anything past 60k miles your on borrowed time... Also I know in Australia, the TT's there are told at 50k miles or something, anyways it's less then what USA manuals says.

My car has too many miles, 150,000 to be excact. I replaced it at 90k or so. I wasted 1100 on an extended warranty that was never used and expired at 100k. The mechanic called earlier today to tell me I have compression in no cylinders at all! So thats 7 or so hours of labor, some machining and up to 20 valves. So far Im looking at $1,800. Now its time to just find a rebuilt head and save on labor if possible. Does anyone know of a reputable rebuilder or somewhere to get new heads for 1.8T's at? All I know is I have officially given up on volkswagens. I havent had many mechanical faliures but this is the second $1,500 dollar bill I have had. Other one was my fault from an accident but a cv shaft shouldnt cost 600 bucks. Plus I've never seen an interior fall apart so fast and a manufacture not cover it under warranty.

Just an update for those who care. It cost $1700 and some change. It took out all exaust valves and the belt and tensioner. Also a few other parts and some head work. Traded the car in the next week! German cars just arent for me. They are great when they work but not when you get the bill from the mechanic! Plus the tranny was starting to go so I figured why not get rid of it before it digs 3 or 4 grand more out of my pocket

Yeah, I traded it in the other day for a tahoe. It was a day of relief! The jetta was nice, I didnt have a problem that was the cars fault before the timing belt that was too costly. I did lose control on some ice and bust the cv shaft and some other front end parts that set me back 1800 bucks. It was just getting to the point of nickeling and diming me. Well in the case of a VW more than a nickel or a dime. So I got a suv I can fix and that has cheap parts that I dont have to wait a week and a half for. Plus after checking out there forums, the problems are nothing like they are here. Not saying there flawless, just not as problematic.

You're going to spend more on gas than with the tahoe than you do on repairs on the jetta.
