Default 2001 Jetta excessive oil consumption

I own a 2001 Jetta GLS 2.0 liter. I think the car has always used oil, but now at 80,000 miles it's really using a lot, perhaps a quart every 800-1000 miles. The dealer tells me this is normal, which is complete b.s. as far as I'm concerned. I have a Ford Ranger with 120,000 miles that does not use a drop in 5000 miles.
Does anyone have this same condition? Is it rings? The car does not leak oil-there is no oil in my driveway, though there is a bit of oil on the pan when I look under the car.
Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Its normal that vw's leak/burn oil but your right that is an excessive amount. I don't quite know where to tell you to look, basically start by looking under the car when it is parked overnight, look for oil spots. Look at the undercarriage and in the motor bay for noticeable leaks. And finally, smell the exhaust and look for a blueish tint to smoke when you start it after its been sitting awhile.

try to follow the oil on the oil pan you noticed. If it is comming from the oil pan then it might need a new seal. Just make sure you know where its comming from. If its dirty, meaning you have oil everywhere, then clean the motor, and then run it until the leak begins to start, and you will know where its comming from. With how much you said your burning, and that it doesn't leak, it could be hard to find. Or it could be a combination of leaking and burning. Good luck

I guess I didn't read that last line of your post before I did...

Eitherway, what oil are you using?

Thanks for the responses. I'll try cleaning, and then watching it.
