Default 337 vs 20th AE

Ive been looking at gti's for a while now and I'm just wondering what the main differences are in the 337 edition and the 20th AE gtis. Anything performance related or is it all just cosmetic (different body kit, wheels, etc.). Seems like all the 20th gtis Ive seen are selling for about 3-4k more than the 337s and I was wondering why.

also,
both have a six speed instead of the regular five speed. What are the benefits of the 6-speed? I was told by a friend that a 6 gets better gas mileage and was wondering if that was correct.

The diffs are mainly cosmetic. I'm actually not sure if the trannies are exactly the same but they should be similar. The 337 is probably selling for less b/c it come out a year or two before the 20th AE. Your friend would be correct if they geared it differently but from what I recall the the 6 speed is at similar rpms in 6th as my 5 speed is in 5th so the mpg would be about the same.

The 20thAE models are in 3 different colors (Imola Yellow, Jazz Blue and Black Magic Pearl) and come with a black headliner and sunroof. The GTI 337 only comes in silver, no sunroof, grey headliner. The rest of the car is the same pretty much...the 20th uses slightly different headlights, with a black trim surround (both cars have fog lamps) and the 337 spoiler is slightly different from the 20th/R32 hatch spoiler, the rest of the bodykit is the same.

They only imported about 1700 or so 337 editions, and the model is intended to pay homage to the original '76 Golf GTI, hence the lack of sunroof. The 337 edition is much more rare than the 5000 or so 20thAE models produced, but the 20ths are much more feature packed over the 337.

The O2M 6 speed used in both cars are close ratio transmissions, as opposed to the regular O2J 5 speed which has a wider ratio. Both end up at the same cruising RPM in top gear. If you know how to shift well the 6 speed could be quicker....

Feel free to ask any more questions you may have.

337s are also lighter, if that means anything to you. They also have different seats and wheels as well. Everything on the inside of a 337 (steering wheel, shift boot) is stitched in red, the 20th has silver stitching. The 20ths have the coolest seatbelts ever, though. The red stitching down either side, ah i love it. 337s also have shot-peened finish BBS RCs which are much lighter than the OZ Aristos that the 20ths have. Just some more useless info I picked up.

thanks for the help guys.
kind of sounds like I'd like the 20th better
it comes with the sunroof which I like better, but when I think about it, I pretty much never use a sunroof anyway, cant stand the noise of them.
but at the same time I like the wheels on the 337 better....
hmmm....
or I could just go with a plain factory gti or a heavily modified one like carsons...

oh well,
i shall do some more pondering.

You also get the sweet Rabbit emblem on the 20th. Something to think about...

yeah, that is one thing that I dislike about the 337...shouldnt there be some kind of special emblem on it that says 337 or at least something like that?

i am not abig fan of emblems or moldings that dont really need to be there. i removed my badges and al i have left is the VW emblem located in the trunk. that i know... 337's dont have any emblem that says it. still, you can always mix and match the best of both later on down the road. get teh 20th and then when you got cash im sure you can find a set of 337 rims to swap on. just an idea.

Well the 337 has the chrome GTI grille badge that no other GTI has (except for the 20th which has a red one).
