Can anyone tell me if it's seriously wrong to use Castrol syntec 5w-50 in the VW tdi? I can only find the 5w40 through the dealer.

I just put the german castrol 0w30 in my 1.8t and it's purring like a kitten now. I had some significant valve noise before hand and it has subsided quite a bit. On top of that, the winter rating is great since I live in Maine and it tends to get pretty cold up here in the winter.

Jesus i just did an oil change before reading thsi and i put Valvoline Symthetic 10w30 , i live in Canada . is this good or should i return to 5w30 or 0w30 for the winter . sure the 0w30 is more liquid but does it protec as much in the high temps of summer , Vw engines get very hot and have high power . My owner's manual in my 92 1.8 8v (non turbo says to put anywher from 5w30- 15w40 so wtf is a good engine oil for my car . he says this, they says that

I'm buying a 99 GLS TDI with 120k miles this week. I'm new to the VW. Should I go with the 0w30 if i can find it? I know it's a lot of miles and i want to get as many miles as possible out of this car.

Have you looked at specs on AMSOIL Euro AFL? http://www.reykurassociatesinc.com/c...5W30.pdf<br />

We recommend Max manufacturer interval when under warranty ( 10,000 mile severe, 15,000 mile normal) and the AMSOIL EaO filters. Beyond Warranty, our oils are recommended 25,000/annual interval. If you are sophisticated enough to have access to oil testing you'll longer intervals than that. ( Deisel spec is same oil).

Check your VW model here http://www.amsoil.com/scripts/runisa...msoiloaf:index

I can arrange group buys or preferred customer accounts.

Here's what AMSOIL has, specifically for VW/AUDI:

AMSOIL European Car Formula Synthetic 5W-40 Motor Oil (AFL) is specially formulated for the lubrication needs of modern European gasoline and diesel cars and light trucks. Formulated with advanced AMSOIL synthetic base stocks, premium additives and a 5W-40 viscosity rating, AMSOIL AFL is the preferred oil for virtually all European automobiles, especially turbo charged models. It is one of the only oils in North America to be recommended for the latest specifications of all three major European automakers - Volkswagen (Audi), BMW and Mercedes-Benz and the latest North American API specification. AMSOIL AFL is highly versatile for multiple applications.

http://www.amsoil.com/StoreFront/afl.aspx

AMSOIL, the leader in automotive synthetic lubrication, produced the world's first API qualified synthetic motor oil in 1972. Trust the extensive experience of AMSOIL The First in Synthetics® to do the best job protecting your engine.

Maximum Engine Protection
AMSOIL Synthetic European Car Formula contains high quality anti-wear additives and surpasses the tough ACEA oil specifications for high temperature/high shear viscosity. It provides outstanding protection in high RPM, hot running engines and delivers dependable long-term performance for the extended drain intervals set by European automakers.

Superior Engine Cleanliness
The excellent oxidation stability, heat resistance and detergency properties of AMSOIL Synthetic European Car Formula keep engines clean. It is specially designed to prevent sludge and varnish deposits for reduced oil consumption, extended engine life and maximum overall performance.

Minimizes Exhaust Emissions
AMSOIL European Car Formula is designed for newer vehicle emission control systems. It meets current industry and vehicle manufacturer requirements for long life protection of gasoline vehicle catalytic converters and diesel particulate filters (DPF).

All Season Performance
The broad 5W-40 viscosity rating, low volatility (burn-off) and wax free nature of AMSOIL Synthetic European Car Formula make it excellent for hot and cold temperatures. Engine wear is reduced, oil thickening is controlled and vehicles start easier in cold temperatures.

APPLICATION
AMSOIL Synthetic European Car Formula is formulated to surpass the most demanding European specifications. It is recommended for European and North American gasoline or diesel vehicles requiring any of the following worldwide specifications:

API SM/CF
ACEA C3-04
ACEA A3/B3-04
ACEA A3/B4-04
ACEA C3
BMW LL-04
Mercedes Benz 229.31, 229.51
Porsche
Saab
Volvo
Volkswagen 502.00, 505.00, 505.01
DaimlerChrysler MS-10725
Service Life
Recommended for the extended drain intervals established by the vehicle manufacturer or extend based on oil analysis. Change oil filter at time of oil change.

Mixing AMSOIL
AMSOIL AFL is compatible with conventional and synthetic motor oils. Mixing AMSOIL motor oils with other oils, however, will shorten the life expectancy and reduce the performance benefits. AMSOIL does not support extended drain intervals where oils have been mixed. Aftermarket oil additives are not recommended for use with AMSOIL motor oils.

Here are two reports on oil performance comparisons. Royal Purple appears in the first report.

http://www.amsoil.com/products/stree...hitePaper.aspx

Royal purple didn't make it into the top 20 on the automotive testing:

Default Audi used dodge engine by texas junkyards

If you want a good selection id try a parts locator. One place that can find you a good short or long block for a Audi A4 used engine is TEXAS Junkyards, Junk Yards in TEXAS TX salvage recycler. They have a link somehow to multiples of thousands of recycling centers and will locate the best one for you.

I just purchased a 2003 Glx. It looks like most of the oil changes were done at the dealer with synthetic blend. I was thinking about going to castrol full synthetic. It has 51000 miles. Gave 10000 for it am very happy. Any thoughts anybody. Thank You

I use Mobil 1 5w-30, but Castrol Syntec works decent too. I didn't really notice a difference from Mobil 1 to Castrol Syntec and the Castrol was actually more expensive. 5W-30 every 5000 miles has been what I've been using for the last 25000 miles, and my car has been working flawlessly.
