It's traction control..I know they mean the same thing but I'm not sure what ESP stands for but ASR (which is what I have) is Anti-Slip Regulation. Basically when one of your tires starts to spin at 100 RPM's more than any of the other's it is braked independently from the others and throttle is cut down. Turning this off should allow you to have a very good launch. You'll see when you turn it off that an exclamation mark with a circular arrow will appear yellow on your gauge cluster. That just means it's off, when that light blinks at you you're losing traction.

anyone have an odd crunching noise when you slip one tire? not sure how to describe the noise, but when the tires spin (snow, rain, etc) it makes an occasional odd noise.. Otherwise the car NEVER makes a peep like that.

That would be the ASR kicking in, you should see that caution light come on when it happens. The cars basically trying to correct itself. Unless you were breaking, it might be your ABS kicking in.

Oh and one more thing for everyone, ESP and ASR do two totally different things:

ASR: car detects front wheel spin, engine reduces power and torque to reduce condition and keep you going.

ESP: Car detects front wheel spin, ABS activates on spinning wheel to transfer power to other wheel. Also, if car decides to go in a direction other than indicated by steering wheel direction ABS activates on a specific wheel to re-stabilize the car.

Fun fact of the day haha.
