Default auto transmission won't shift out of 1st

Hello,

I'm a happy (original) owner of a black 2000 golf, auto 2.0 4dr w/black interior. It's a car darth vader would be proud of.

I got my temp sensor, and struts and springs finally fixed correctly. Each took a couple of passes to get done right. As well I had the vac lines replaced and my persistent engine light, P172, is now off.

The car is almost completely fixed (other that some cosmetic issues). Time for the tranny to die. I've gotten 172K out of my automatic which from what I understand is pretty good. It's now stuck in limp mode where it won't shift out of 1st gear. I had my new mechanic replace the G68 speed sensor but it made no difference. I talked to my old mechanic about fixing it or replacing the transmission. He suggested replacing it. He has connections with junk yards and I'm sure he could find me one that works.

However is there a chance it could be the ECM, TCM or one of the other two sensors? I don't want to replace the transmission if I don't have to. From what I understand limp mode can be caused by a lot of reasons.

thanks,

-Jason

How about this? The same shift happened to me, dump the auto or CrapTronic and throw in a manual. Just a FYI new Tranny ~$5000, rebuild ~$2500, manual swap DIY ~$1400-$2000 depending on what parts you choose.

I was thinking of switching over if my mechanic can handle it. Not sure yet though. I haven't had a chance to talk to him yet.

That's what I'm thinking. However I want to make sure that I don't get another tranny and find out it was the TCM or ECM all along and I still can't shift out of first with the new one. My mechanic generally has a lot of spare stuff lying around so hopefully he can eliminate the external electronics as a source of my limp mode prior to switch out the tranny.

the only way hes going to be able to tell if thats the problem.. tcm / ecm.. is with vag com.. if he doesnt have vag com.. which most shops do not.. hes not going to be able to test the entire cars electronic functions etc.

but i highly doubt its the tcm or ecm. are you able to pull a code? if the tcm went bad or ecm or any other sensor.. it will give a code.. but again.. you might need vag com to pull the tcm code.. NOT 100% sure on that though. it might work with a regular scanner..

but it sounds to be like your triptronic just took a shit. and its new tranny time. dont waste your time rebuilding a vw trans (trip / auto) they dont hold up.. your best bet if your going to put the money into the auto / trip trans is to just straight up replace it with an original one. or swap to manual as stated above and yes.. 170k plus on your auto trans.. you got lucky.. most mk4 auto vw trans dont even last that long.. theyre junk.

My moneys on a week of stage 2.

Like a red headed step child.

I figure... Sometime in april/may. When I go 42DD turbo back and stage 2 apr. My trans will just collapse.
I'll try to be gentle, but honestly, if our autos are as weak as said, it won't last long at all.

We'll see.

stage 2 on automatic.. good luck..

i dont even think they have a flash for the auto for that exact reason.. they dont wana be held reliable. i hope you dont go apr.. i have it in my car with my k04 setup.. apr stage 2 k04 flash.. i despise it. i get so many boost cuts.. and my plugs always come out white.. im running way to lean.. and if i go to a 4.5 bar fuel pressure regulator my plugs are black.. and a 4 bar which is reccomended by apr.. im too lean..

Lol... I think even if I don't go stage 2, the extra torque from that exhaust will be murder. :/

OP here. My auto doesn't have tiptronic and I am the original owner and have never beaten on it. As well I have been really babying the car for the past 2 years or so. I drive mostly highway and I've been putting the car it cruise control and maintaining a speed of 60mph. It only adds a couple of minutes to my commute. I also had the tranny fluid changed at 100K and then decided to get it done the right way and had the fluid and filter changed at 130K.

My wife is trying to get me to consider buying a new car but we can't really afford it. Plus I really have my sites set on a MQD platform TDI. I'd like to get the 1.6L diesel. I'm hoping VW will start selling the 1.6 diesel in 2013/14 along with the TSFI engines. If I stick with my current golf I'll have to drive it for the next three years and then can afford to buy the model I really want. She offered to let me drive her 2010 prius and get her a civic or corolla. LOL. There's no way I'm driving a prius after owning a vw. It gets great mileage but is boring to drive in the extreme.
