thinking about getting a chip. the car's probably going to be at 50 k before i get it and i'm planning on a new clutch soon. will the turbo get owned if i add a chip now? i see most of the guys on here have newer cars than mine (2000 1.8t gti)

Well my car has low miles so it 's hard to say. But on the other forum I am on they recomend changing the timing belt. Most 1.8T's kind of lose it at around 60k even though VW recomends to change it at 100k you have to factor in the chipping. The turbo wi be fine. Most turbo blown issues revolve around either defective from the factory , over boosting or poor oil change maintinence
If the clutch still holds good don't change it yet. Invest that 500 bucks in the new timing belt job you won't be sorry you did Happy Boosting

But plan on needing a new clutch not too far down the road anyway, they raarely last many miles on a chipped 1.8T.

You should stop by APTuning in Lebanon this weekend for their Open House...they are giving away a chip and offering the APR chip special. (shameless plug).
