Climate control dash panel has no lights. Radio, dash and all other buttons have lights. Any idea what to look for first? I'm assuming that entire dash light setup has one fuse in the fusebox and that there aren't seperate fuses for each section. Also car has been stumbling as of late. Usually under acceleration and not all the time. I notice it most when rpm's are under 3 grand. I've cleaned the Throttle Body with throttle body cleaner. It was pretty dirty. I'm thinking now maybe a new fuel filter?
Thanks guys.
Greg
This is a 1999 Jetta MK4 body style with the 2.0 liter engine and manual tranny.
I believe that Carson once said that the bulb for the climate control is behind the center knob; all you need to do is pull the knob out with a straight-out motion, then change the bulb that resides in there. I am sure Carson can hook you up with a part number.
As for the hesitation, I would throw some fuel-injector cleaner into the tank and maybe use a higher grade fuel to see if that helps. If it isn't the fuel delievery, the only other thing I can think of is a problem with the ECU, and that is pretty unlikely. Also, what transmission do you have? I kind of doubt it is a tranny problem, but if you have an automatic it can sometimes be the case. Hope this helps.
Thanks for the info so far. It's a manual transmission as I stated originally. I have been running premium fuel since I bought the car. Incidentally I've noticed it pinging lately under heavy acceleration, so I don't know if that narrows the possibilities down any. I will try to run some fuel injection cleaner in it on my next fill up. And I'll try to replace that little bulb myself. I have no frickin finger nails, so the piece of tubing sounds like the way to go, or get my 6 year old daughter to pull the bulb out...lol
As stated above, the bulb is inside the fan control knob on the climate controls. Wrap the jaws of some channel lock pliers with a rag, and grip the knob and pull out. Then, slip some vacuum line over the bulb and pull out. Install is the reverse of removal.
When did you last replace the spark plugs? Also, have you cleaned your MAF ever?
I just bought this car used. I've never cleaned the maf on it. Any website that points me to general instructions on how to do that? I will google it too. Thank you so much for the help.
Damn...thank you very much. That rocks! I'm going to clean the MAF this weekend and I'll let you all know how that turns out. It sounds like it's a problem piece on dubs. The wiring leading to the MAF on my Nissan Pathfinder was a problem too. I had to jiggle the connector every so often to get the Pathy to idle correctly. So it's not just dubs that have problem MAF's.
well, the MAF sensor (at least for the VR6) had a factory update if you had less thank 70k miles on it at least. The factory update is vws way to get around a recall-they replace it if it has a problem. It is the same for the window regulators. They had a factory update too. Cleaning the MAF sensor is very easy. Just make sure you let it dry completely.
Well....I cleaned the TB, I cleaned the MAF sensor (which was very easy) and I'm running fuel injection cleaner through my current tank of gas. I do use premium which is 91 octane here in the Pacific Northwest. However, the hesitation is still present as well as the pinging under acceleration. The hesitation seems to be most prevalent when the engine is warm and I let my rpm's drop below 3000 in any gear and accelerate from there without downshifting. If I keep the revs up, the hesitation doesn't exist. Of course my wife, who drives like a an old lady, never notices it <grin> This car is new to us, but has 95000 miles on it. The check engine light has not come on but I'm assuming that doesn't mean that a code hasn't been tripped? Also is it typical of dubs to use oil? It's not blowing smoke and it's not leaking out. And seems to be down about a 1/2 quart a week. Keep in mind I do a LOT of stop and go city driving because of my job and it's our only car currently. Other than my 59 bug, this is my first vw, so I apologize in advance if these are no0b questions......
1/2 a quart a week? You probably need piston rings...VW has a technical bulletin for oil consumption...did you buy the car from a VW dealer?
I bought a used 2.0 in december and have been having the same problem. If I was to go to the VW dealer about this problem what could I expect to hear from them? or how much money would I be looking at to fix this problem? If I didn't get this fixed would it hurt my car in the long run? And as a last question is there a website were I could go to look up any info on this subject?
This is all it turned out to be. I bought it used so no telling how long it's been since the plugs were changed. One plug resembled a spark plug on the wire end! Let's just say the other end.....well......resembled a ball of melted glass! The service guy and I had a good laugh over the condition of the plugs. He's gonna hang them on the wall so people can see what happens when you don't maintain your vehicle
For anyone that needs to replace the climate control bulb, I found this site with pics:
