Default do i need a new engine?? please help

So here's what happened, nailed something in the road and blew a huge hole in my oil pan, got a new pan, filled up 3 quarts of cheap oil and a quart of engine cleaner ran it through and emptied(I could see grass and small pebbles in my old oil pan and in the oil pump filter gate, cleaned as much as I could manually before I ran it) emptied everything and filled it up with some 10-30, was headin into work today, driving fine, about 4-5 miles down troad my oil pressure light started flashing and beeping, so I pulled over, oil was full and there were no leaks at all, so I turned around and started heading home, as I would drive I could start to hear my lifters making noise and my light would sit and flash, however when I would stop the light would go off, also my rpm would dip a little then come back up.. I was worried I have a bad oil pump, which would be an easy fix for me, but these don't seem like the right symptoms..
on a side not when I lost all my oil I had to drive a few blocks to get somewhere safe to load it on the trailer, also had to drive it on and off the trailer
Could this.be a bad oil pump, or is it more, I found a vr6 at a local junkyard for like 200-300 bucks, if its more then the oil pump would it be better to go with the vr6, how hard are they to swap? There were no metal shavings in my oil when I changed it last, I haven't checked this new natch of oil yet though
Sorry for the long post..

Best bet is to run the car for any codes via OBDII. So if you have one available, go scan the car and see what it shows. It might tell you exactly what's wrong. And if it's a bad oil pump, it'll definitely show up.

Hard to tell without pulling things apart and inspecting them. Try a scaner first, and check codes against Rosstech or somewhere you trust. If nothing comes up, starting looking manually.

So ran for codes and got nothing, which means my oil pump is ok? I guess it could be debri stuck in the filter gate maybe? Or is it lookin like something bad that would require an engine overhaul
Ps the vr6 has no tranny, can it bolt up to my tranny? Then all I wouldd need is the engine ecu and cluster right? I can get that for under 300, there's also two passats that have some 2.0 turbo engine, it looks like the 2.0 turbo you get in an Audi

I would pull plugs and check them for anything wierd (coolant etc in your oil), Drop the pan andclean everything out of it and run a couple oil changes through it.

So I just dropped my pan, no funny fluids or anything just clean oil coming out, however, in the bottom of my pan there were the metal shavings... What's that an indicator of most likely?

Hard to say, metal shavings in oil can be any moving part and static part that is rubbed by the moving parts...

It would be prudent to clean the pan of all metal shavings then try a magnetic oil plug and drive it ~100 miles and check the plug and oil. If there are more metal particles it may be time to swap the motor or rebuild it.

So I pulled my oil pump out, he looks flawless, however that little mesh covering on the pick up line has some stuff in it, what's the best way to get that out? Compressed air?

To be honest I bet something just got sucked up in the pump and when you give it has increasing the pressure telling it to pump but it's blocked it clogged causing what's happening, I wouldn't say you need a new motor and the swaps are a pain in the ass, mine was...

A bad pump will NOT show up with a code scan.

You have already discovered your problem, you need to remove the pickup tube and clean it out. All that junk covering the screen is blocking the supply to the pump.

You can use compressed air, engine degreaser, brake cleaner, or even a garden hose. Just be sure to dry it completely before reassembly. I think there is an o-ring on the end.. If so be sure to reinstall it.

Keep cleaning it until it is completely clear, and that should solve your problem.

By the way, this is a common problem with high mileage VWs, especially after cylinder head replacement or damage such as yours.

so i cleaned out the pick up tube, and it looked brand new theres was nothing in it at all, cleaned all the shavings out of my pan and put it all back together, took a few blocks of driving then the problem started back up again(under no load engine would rev fine) at about 3000 rpm with a load if i was giving it gas i could very faintly start to hear my lifters again, the more i drove(to get back home) the louder it got and at lower rpms, when i finally got home i could hear my lifters right at 2k rpm.

i took apart my whole oil pump, it was spotless, pick up tube was looking brand new when i put it back in, what would be the next place to check as it sounds like im still starving for oil, but only under load, idle is perfect. Should i check my oil squirters, could they have gotten clogged? and if so how do i get to them? just pull my head off? ill look into that.
thanks for the help guys

ok correct me if im wrong, but i think i was mistaken with oil squirters, those are to cool/lubricate the pistons right? im not positive exactly how the oil circulatory system works, does anyone have a good link to read about it? what does the oil go through to get to the cams and what should i be checking next for clogging?
