Default Few Problems With the Jetta

1. Not everytime but roughly 60% of the time i start my car, it makes this noise. which sounds like an elephant (the best way i can describe, and ive had people come up to me and say it sounds like an elephant, so...) what could be wrong with that... someone else told me it could be my timing belt... any ideas at all....

2. My Drivers side headlight doesnt light up as much as my right one, ive seen other vws driing around with the same thing, but i have no idea what it is, i dont think it could be the bulbs because it happened before i got my blue bulbs, and it still happens.

When im normally driving at night you can notice it, but if i hold my high beam, the light will go completly dimm.... any suggestions on both, hopefully you all can help me... thanks

2: Far as the headlights, the driverside one is probably just aimed higher up, so it looks like its brighter... Just an idea...

Good call, didn't even think of that... Very well could be the problem...

How long does this noise last when you start it up?

98a4, the driver side is the one that isnt bright, thats the problem.

and nah... its a 2.0... and it only does it as i start my car... someone told me today it might be my serpentine belt (sorry for the spelling cant remember the name), does anyone know if this could be true?

Your elephant-like noise is probably your starter going bad...it only happens at startup and then stops right after you start the car, right?

As for your headlight problem...check the wiring harness inside the headlight and see if its not shorting out (burnt wires or connectors)...sounds like you might need a headlamp assembly. Check the wires and let us know whats up!

Yea my car has that noise too! How can my starter go bad at only 47,000 miles? Maybe I am mistaking but that just seems a little premature... I have an 1.8T though...

Mine went bad at 30,000...its a not-so-common failure, but they do fail. Right now it may be working, but when you hear that noise, its the beginning of the end for the starter.

ok, im going to get a serpentine belt just in case, but how do you get a starter, and/or how much does it cost parts/labor.

second, i will check out the wiring, im pretty sure i wouldnt be able to tell the difference between normal and burned wired, but i will take pictures if no one aroud knows.

and last but not least, im guessing this is a common problem? with the noise?

nope i lied, this is the last questions, im going buy smoked headlights soon, will that take care of that problem? thanks alot again in advance.

the fact that you will be getting smoked headlights will not cure the light issue you have. if i remember correctly 9 out of 10 companies that will do headlights never send you bulbs or a wiriing harness. like gti said, it may be wiring. trust me when you notice a bad wire, you will know that its bad. usually they will appeap brown or even black, with wires exposed in some case. looks burned almost. like 98a4 said to, maybe the bulb is just angled higher so it appears to be dimmer. drivers side or not, it could be a possiblity. hope that its nothing serious man.
