Im looking into buying a 2005 1.8T 6speed Jetta with 105k miles and I just recently owned a 300zx. If anyone else has had a 300 they know they are a lot of upkeep.. When I go to look at the Jetta, what are some things I should look out for or ask about as far as regular maintenance and things like that. I know the water pump and timing belt was done at 98k miles. Any help on this would really be appreciated guys. Im going to look at her next week.

Reason: specs
You'll get more feedback in the MK4 section so I will move this post to that section for you
As for my input, timing belt and water pump is key on these cars. Good to know it's been done. I assume it's a GLI so you've got a nice base under there.

check for a leaky valve cover gasket. trans fluid is due to be changed. check for torn cv boots. check the coilpack harness for cracks. expect to replace every suspension component soon if it hasnt been done.

Look at the parking brake cables. Check for "bubbles" in the cable jackets.
When the outer jacket rots away, the cables don't release and you wind up dragging the rear brakes.
I tried looking this up to get an idea of where its located, and from what it looks like I would have to jack it up or put it on a lift, or start removing parts which I doubt I could do. Is there another way to check? Also, Im going to have it looked at by s shop before I buy. Again, thanks for all the help guys
double post... but it looks like this thing has a BOV instead of a DV. I can only look at the pictures and I'm pretty new to this stuff but from what I've read the BOV aren't good. Tell me what you think (and if the image loaded) and if it is a BOV, how hard would it be to swap this out, or would it already have cause too much damage to the engine? Im calling the guy about it tomorrow but its from a dealer so theres no telling how much he knows about it. Thanks in advance.
*fixed your picture*
swapping out the bov is a 10 min. job. i would be asking the owner more about the vehicle. bov throws a big red flag. it does have a filter bolted to the maf sensor too so that shows the owner was into modding it. does it have a boost gauge? you might want to know what it is pushing for boost. stock it should be 8-12psi. should be 12 since it is 03+.
eh just saw you said it an 02...but it looks to be a gli. i could be wrong but i thought the 1.8t 6spds didnt get put into the gli until 04. if its a 2002 it should have the vr6 with a 6 spd. if its a 2002 and has the 1.8t with a 6 speed then someone swapped it in. or its not really a 2002. or not even a gli. any interior pictures? you need to get that vin# and the white tag in the trunk in the spare tire compartment and see what the car really is. now the car sounds dishy to me.
ok 05 makes sense. none of these cars came with boost gauges. whats the asking price? dont pay more than $10k. i would be hoping its $8 or less. there is a good thing and bad things about it being modified. one, the person who did it might know there stuff and did everything right. or they just didnt really care and just wanted to throw stuff on. really shows how the car was taken care of. if the work done on the car is nice and not haggard then the car was probably treated right. also you will need new strut mount bushings and bearings. in the engine pic you can see the big gap at the strut tower. thats signs of bad ones.
i recently replaces mine. no gap. its cheap and pretty easy to do.
It's $8350. I'm still learning about these but I was up pretty late last night reading up on them so I feel at least a little comfortable with doing some small mods. I really appreciate the help everyone has given! It definitely helped me out.
